Course Description: This course provides an overview of leadership through a theoretical perspective. Learners will begin to see the role and styles of leadership in relation to the culture of schools and communities.

Statement of Course Objectives:


1. To analyze the major theories of leadership.
2. To study areas of personal growth and self awareness as they relate to leadership.

3. To examine student's own basic skills of leadership.
4. To support students to understand their own leadership style.
5. To critically analyze leadership and understand the relative advantages and disadvantages of each approach studied.
6. To identify and evaluate the contemporary issues of leadership in today's world in the broad context of national and global trends.

Course Outcome Competencies:

(At the end of this course students will be able to:)
1. Explain the basic theories and concepts of leadership.
2. Apply understandings of communication styles, learning styles and self awareness in personal and work settings.
3. Assess and examine personal beliefs, styles, and leadership behaviors to increase self-awareness.
4. Evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of different styles and approaches to leadership.
5. Recognize contemporary leadership issues in today's world context.

6. Create an analysis of an organization based on ethical considerations.

7. Conduct a self-analysis of leadership potential.
8. Recognize the leadership approaches and communication syles of others.

Instructional Strategies

The following instructional strategies and formats will be used this semester:

A variety of assignments and class activities will incorporate the following instructional strategies: reflection and self-assessment, small and large group discussion and problem solving, library and Internet research activities, technology related assignments, analysis of school and community organizations, interviews, text and Internet readings as assigned, and weekly web-based (asynchronous) threaded discussions and online class activities.

 

Diversity

This semester's coursework will incorporate an analysis of inclusion and diversity issues in leadership and in the development of an understanding of the value and importance of diversity and cultural sensitivity. In addition, online threaded discussions will emphasize the importance and practice of eliciting and understanding diverse experiences, opinions, and insights.
