The mission of the GLBT Services office is to develop, coordinate, implement and evaluate programs and services that affirm GLBT people in support of their academic success and social development, while encouraging an environment that promotes and appreciates multiculturalism.
The GLBT Services staff works to improve the campus climate by collaborating with collegiate units, local, state and national organizations to address the harmful effects of discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identification.

The GLBT Services office provides support to GLBT people at UMD. We seek to create a supportive environment through social networks and community interaction, thereby enhancing GLBT students’ opportunities for academic success. The GLBT Services office is committed to promoting academic excellence and leadership opportunities. The office provides opportunities to learn about GLBT people, issues and culture.

The educational experiences available to a student placed in the GLBT Services would be as follows, including three primary areas of focus:

Student Group Support
-Queer Students Union (QSU) group advising
-Program development/planning
-Assistance with conflict resolution/interpersonal communication difficulties (this group -frequently encounters board-related problems, mostly dealing with interpersonal conflicts)
Counseling (high need)
-Assisting GLBT students find solutions to problems, including family issues, stress reduction tactics, coming out, relationship issues, interpersonal difficulties within student group, roommate conflicts, internalized homophobia, financial problems resulting from parents no longer funding college expenses after coming out, coping with stress of being “out,” dealing with harassment and reporting protocol, drug/alcohol abuse, sexual concerns/ safe sex.
Administrative Support
-Assisting with campus-wide program development
-Outreach to community organizations, developing partnerships to support GLBT -Services on campus
-Preparing reports/compiling office statistics
