Experiences available include ICWA case management through traditional court ordered child protection, as well as through voluntary programs that include Families First (only in Duluth) and the Parent Support Outreach Program; on and off-reservation foster care licensing and other foster care social work duties including facilitating trainings for foster parents and work in the SELF program; participation in the Child Abuse and Prevention planning committee; children’s mental health work in coordination with the social service department; opportunities for hands-on learning about policies that effect the American Indian population, including ICWA, PL-280, ASFA, and the Tribal-State Agreement. Students will also be expected to attend weekly social work team meetings and some collaborative meetings with Carlton and St. Louis counties, as well as some other meetings that occur throughout their placement.
