MSW Program Highlights

Mission

The mission of the Department of Social Work at the University of Minnesota Duluth is: 1) to promote the well being of individuals, families, groups and communities and 2) to advance social justice through teaching, research and service. The Department provides student-centered graduate social work education to prepare advanced practitioners for northern Minnesota and beyond. Priorities of the Department include preparing culturally competent advanced generalist social workers, emphasizing services with American Indians and their communities, services to children and families, and social work education for practice in rural settings.

Highlights of the Master of Social Work (M.S.W.) Degree Program

  • Accredited by the Council on Social Work Education.

  • A small, student-centerd program with individualized faculty-student interaction.

  • One of the select MSW program in the nation which prepares students for "advanced generalist" practice including working directly with clients in a range of social services settings, administration, and community development activities.

  • A multi-racial/multi-gender faculty with expertise in servicing culturally and socially diverse populations.

  • A core curriculum which addresses issues of discrimination and the special needs of American Indians, women, and other underserved populations.

  • An advanced standing program for students with an accredited BSW degree that can be completed in one calendar year.

  • Full-time and part-time plans of study with late afternoon and evening courses.

  • A special commitment to American Indians with strong linkages to the American Indian Community.

  • Scholarship and educational opportunities for students focusing on child welfare practice.

  • Opportunities to learn about social work practice in rural communities.

  • A wide selection of excellent recreational and cultural activities and medium-size university setting.

  • Upper northwoods location in urban area of 100,000 people, with excellent recreational and cultural activites and medium-size university setting.

  • An outstanding, dynamic and dedicated faculty who are involved in scholarly pursuits in areas such as: American Indian health and social services, domestic violence, women's issues, instructional technology, interanational social services, aging, organization models, child welfare, gay and lesbian issues, social work practice models, mental health and cultural competnecy.
