Billing and payment Frequently Asked Questions

Tuition Banding

Effective Fall Semester 2007, UMD has restructured the undergraduate tuition policy in favor of a tuition-banding strategy. All credits above 13 per semester will now be tuition-free. All undergraduates will pay a flat tuition rate based on a 13-credit load; credits 1–12 are assessed at a per-credit rate.

The tuition band is a way to help students reduce the cost of their education, since students who take advantage of the band and graduate in 4 years rather than 5 years pay significantly less. To graduate in 4 years, a student on average must complete 15–16 credits per semester.

Scholarships

UMD has a variable number of full-tuition scholarships for new undergraduates depending on available resources. The scholarships waive tuition only. Recipients are responsible for student service fees, computer fees, books, medical insurance and living expenses. The award is based on financial need, leadership experience, and students' potential to actively participate in the University community. Recipients remain on scholarship during the four years of undergraduate study, provided they maintain their legal status and are in good academic standing. Students who have applied to UMD and have been accepted are eligible to apply for the scholarship. Please see International Student Scholarship for more information and the application form.

Additionally, UMD students are eligible for the Rutherford International Student Scholarship. Please see Rutherford International Student Scholarship for more information and the application form. This scholarship is for students in good academic standing who demonstrate some financial need.

We also serve the education community through research and advocacy on behalf of students, educators, schools and colleges.

Financial Aid and Work Study

Financial aid as discussed by UMD generally refers to federal or state financial aid that is only available to domestic students. This funding is not available to people on F-1, F-2, J-1, and J-2 visas.

International students are not eligible for employment that specifies "Work Study Only". Work Study means the position is funded partially by federal or state financial aid money so international students are not eligible.
