Graduate International Students
Graduate students must attend a mandatory orientation session for all new international students on August 29th (location and time to be announced). Undergraduates are required to attend the entire day. Graduate students are welcome to attend the whole orientation, but are only required to attend the F-1 session (time to be announced).
Fall Semester Classes begin September 3rd, 2013.
Graduate students should contact their specific department for more information and any additional requirements.
If you would like to be picked up from the Duluth airport or where the bus or shuttle drops you off in Duluth, please email ISS with your arrival information.
All new students on an F-1 or J-1 visa are required to attend Document Check after their arrival in the U.S. Students will not be allowed to register for classes until they complete Document Check. Document Check is a procedure that verifies a student’s immigration status to ensure that the student is eligible to start an academic program at the University of Minnesota for the upcoming academic semester. Your registration holds, which prevent you from registering for classes, will be discussed with you during Document Check.
You can also bring these items to international student orientation and we can do your Document Check at that time.
There is temporary housing available in on-campus dormitories from August 12th - August 25th for $25 per night. This housing must be reserved at least 2 weeks in advance. If you arrive on campus without a reservation, you will not be able to stay there.
ISS may be able to provide temporary housing for students when they first arrive. Temporary community housing is sometimes offered by families interested in meeting international students. Please let us know two weeks in advance if you would like to request temporary community housing. Email ISS.
UMD is offering on-campus graduate student housing in Junction Apartments as available. These apartments are available August 23, 2013 - May 18, 2014. The cost is $2,392 each semester. These apartments are a great deal because they come with furniture and other ammenities. You just need to provide your own kitchenware and bed linens. If you are interested in living in these on-campus apartments, please email Housing. Please see the Graduate Apartment Brochure for more detailed information.
