Graduate International Students

New Grad Student Orientation is mandatory for new UMD students. Please meet ISS on the following dates . . .

Date: Tuesday, January 10
Time: 12:30pm - 2:00pm
Location: Griggs Center Board Room (Kirby Student Center 202)

Spring Semester Classes begin Wednesday, January 11th, 2017.

Graduate students should contact their specific department for more information and any additional requirements.

If you would like to be picked up from the Duluth airport or where the bus or shuttle drops you off in Duluth, please email ISS with your arrival information. December 28th (or 2 weeks before your arrival), will be the last date to sign up for arrival pick up services from ISS. Please note: ISS arranged pick-up hours are between 8:00am-11:00pm. There will be no more pick up services after January 8th.

Document Check

All new students on an F-1 or J-1 visa are required to attend Document Check after their arrival in the U.S.  Students will not be allowed to register for classes until they complete Document Check.  Document Check is a procedure that verifies a student’s immigration status to ensure that the student is eligible to start an academic program at the University of Minnesota Duluth for the upcoming academic semester.  Your registration holds, which prevent you from registering for classes, will be discussed with you during Document Check.
Bring the following documents with you to the ISS office (KSC 237):

  1. I-20 or DS-2019
  2. Passport and visa stamp (in your passport)
  3. I-94 (if you have a paper I-94 - a white card in your passport that was stamped during your immigration inspection, otherwise we will help you find your electronic I-94 online)
  4. Dependent documents (I-20 or DS-2019, passport, visa stamp, and I-94 card) if you have dependents with you
  5. Previous school’s I-20 or DS-2019 (if you attended another school in the U.S.)
  6. University of Minnesota ID number (on your admission letter)
  7. Sponsor letter (if your tuition & fees are paid directly to the University by a government or international agency)

If you are unable to bring your documents before orienation, please bring your documents to orientation and we can make copies at that time.

Housing Information

Due to limited space, UMD is unable to offer on-campus housing for graduate students. ISS can sometimes help students with their search for off-campus housing. Please contact us for more information.

Temporary community housing is sometimes offered by families interested in meeting international students. Please let us know two weeks in advance if you would like to request temporary community housing. Email ISS.
