Pre-Arrival Information

Graduate International Students

Graduate students must attend a mandatory orientation session for all new international students on Monday, January 19th from 9:00 - 10:30am in Griggs Center (2nd Floor KSC). Light breakfast will be provided.

Spring Semester Classes begin January 20th, 2015.

Graduate students should contact their specific department for more information and any additional requirements.

If you would like to be picked up from the Duluth airport or where the bus or shuttle drops you off in Duluth, please email ISS with your arrival information.

Document Check

All new students on an F-1 or J-1 visa are required to attend Document Check after their arrival in the U.S.  Students will not be allowed to register for classes until they complete Document Check.  Document Check is a procedure that verifies a student’s immigration status to ensure that the student is eligible to start an academic program at the University of Minnesota Duluth for the upcoming academic semester.  Your registration holds, which prevent you from registering for classes, will be discussed with you during Document Check.
Bring the following documents with you to the ISS office (KSC 237):

  1. I-20 or DS-2019
  2. Passport and visa stamp (in your passport)
  3. I-94 (if you have a paper I-94 - a white card in your passport that was stamped during your immigration inspection, otherwise we will help you find your electronic I-94 online)
  4. Dependent documents (I-20 or DS-2019, passport, visa stamp, and I-94 card) if you have dependents with you
  5. Previous school’s I-20 or DS-2019 (if you attended another school in the U.S.)
  6. University of Minnesota ID number (on your admission letter)
  7. Sponsor letter (if your tuition & fees are paid directly to the University by a government or international agency)

If you are unable to bring your documents before orienation, please bring your documents to orientation and we can make copies at that time.

Housing Information

Temporary community housing is sometimes offered by families interested in meeting international students. Please let us know two weeks in advance if you would like to request temporary community housing. Email ISS.

UMD is offering on-campus graduate student housing in Junction Apartments as available. These apartments are a great deal because they come with furniture and other ammenities. You just need to provide your own kitchenware and bed linens. If you are interested in living in these on-campus apartments, please email Housing. Please see the Graduate Apartment Brochure for more detailed information.

UMD housing will be available for new students with contracts starting on Saturday, January 17th, 2015.

Students living in the dorms or on-campus apartments must provide their own towels and bed linens (pillow, XL sheets (36x80 inches) and pillow cases, blankets and bedspreds). Please note, students who live off-campus should not purchase XL or "dorm" sheets because these sizes only fit beds on campus.

If you do not bring your own bed linens, you can order them in advance online and have them delivered to our office so they will be here when you arrive. You can order from any company online. Residence Hall Linens (RHL) is an independent retailer, so we do not endorse them directly, but it is an option. When ordering from any online retailer, please remember the following:

  • Order XL or "dorm-size" sheets and mattress covers (unless you plan to live off-campus)
  • You can usually buy sets/packages or separates depending on your budget and what you want
  • Be certain of what exactly is included in your order (e.g. a comforter set does not usually include sheets or a pillow)
  • Order at least 10-14 days in advance of your arrival
  • Email our officeso we know to expect the package
  • Don't forget to include shipping costs when considering your purchase. (RHL's shipping rates are as follows: Value Paks have free shipping; $0-$25 = $4.95; $25.01-$50 = $8; $50.01-$75 = $10, $75.01-$100 = $14; $100.01-$125 = $18, $125.01-$200 = $22)
  • Be sure to ship the items to the Housing office:
