Stop by the UMD State Fair booth and learn more about our vibrant campus and exciting programs. Meet staff from the Admissions Office, the American Indian teacher training program "Eni-gikendaasoyang" and the Center for Diversity, among others. And watch for UMD student Ashlee Hartwig, a finalist in the Princess Kay of the Milky Way competition.

Dance to the Big Band:
Get out your dancing shoes! Imagine a warm, starry night, relaxing on the lawn of the historic Congdon mansion, Glensheen, watching the moon rise over Lake Superior. On Aug 20 and 27, the Jim Melde Big Band performs the swinging tunes from yesteryear. Take a lesson at 6:30 pm and at 7:30 pm, join the dancers all around you, jiving to the beats.

- Logging Affects Habitat: Forest professionals gather to learn about how breeding birds respond to forest harvesting in tree buffer zones near streams. Anna Peterson, who uses an iPod with speakers to call Ovenbirds, Warblers and Chickadees, is finishing a long-term NRRI research project on birds in forest riparian zones.

- Finland President Receives Honorary Degree: Tarja Halonen, President of the Republic of Finland, was awarded an honorary doctor of laws degree for public service, presented by UMD Chancellor Martin and University regents, on July 25 in Duluth. President Halonen spoke about the importance of education and the strong ties between the U.S. and Finland.
