Program Information Students spend an exciting academic year living and taking courses at the University of Worcester. Worcester is beautifully situated on the banks of the river Severn near the picturesque Malvern Hills, and located in the heart of England. The city of Worcester is centrally located and is a 2 hour train ride from London. The city of Worcester blends its ancient heritage with all the characteristics of a modern town. The city of Worcester is built around a magnificent 11th century cathedral and a key battleground in the English Civil War. Worcester has a population similar to the size of Duluth, the charm of a quaint English town, and all the amenities of a big city.
Course Information This program is directed by 1 UMD faculty who will teach up to two courses each semester. The courses taught by the Director aim to fulfill UMD Liberal Education categories and elective credit. One of the courses the Director will teach each semester is a one credit cultural seminar which is a required course for each program participant. The UMD faculty Director for the 2013-2014 academic year is Professor Judith Blyckert who teaches in the UMD Department of Education. Lastly, you will also have the exciting opportunity to take up to 3 courses each semester taught by University of Worcester Professors alongside British and International students attending the University of Worcester. University of Worcester courses range in subject areas and levels. You can view the currently reviewed courses at the link in the next section. Courses at UoW IMPORTANT: Please note that the courses offered in this program are subject to change as the University of Worcester does not finalize their course schedule for the upcoming year until late spring semester. It is possible that more courses will be added and some may be removed. Use the list as a guide and plan to have backup courses in case of unforeseen changes.View the current list of over 100 courses available to you at UoW from this link. The Program Coordinator can help advise you on the courses available when planning your participation. All courses count as resident UMD credit and count towards your degree at UMD. With careful course selection, you can earn credits towards your major, minor, and liberal education requirements. You will be required to take at least 12 credits each semester and should not exceed 18 credits. All grades earned will count towards your UMD GPA and will appear on your official UMD transcript. The University of Worcester uses a different credit and grading scale that is not the same as UMD. Typically a semester course taken at UoW is the equivalent of 4 UMD credits. You will receive exact details of how the UoW credits and grades transfer at orientations and in the student handbook. You will have the opportunity to choose and register for your classes near the end of spring semester before your departure to England. University of WorcesterThe University of Worcester has an undergraduate student population similar to the size of UMD which allows you to get involved with the university and meet many students from around the U.K. and the world. The University of Worcester is made up of 2 campuses, the original St. John’s Campus and the new (as of 2009) City Centre Campus which are approximately 25 minutes apart on foot. Both campuses offer student accommodation, classroom space, and all of the features and resources of a modern and growing university. The following Institutes (colleges) make up the academic units at the University of Worcester: Institute of Science and the Environment, Institute of Humanities and Creative Arts, Worcester Business School, Institute of Education, Institute of Health and Society, Institute of Sport and Exercise Science. ExcursionsExcursions are organized by the program for you to explore various parts of the U.K. to enhance your experience both inside and outside of the classroom. Each semester you will go on 2-3 excursions which will vary in length from day trips to overnight stays. Some example locations and past favorites are Conwy, Wales, Bath & Stonehenge, and Cornwall, the Southern coast of England. Location Information

You can view the estimated total cost of the program excluding personal expenses here. Students also provide financial support for optional excursions, independent travel, souvenirs, gifts, clothing, and social activities. The amount of money that student's spend on these extra curricular activities vary by how much you travel, where you stay, what and where you eat, what tourist attractions you visit and how many, and many other individual factors. Alumni of this program say that they spent an average of $3,800 in addition to the program cost estimate during their 8 months abroad. It is possible to spend much less and much more depending on your personal needs, wants, and goals. For example: when traveling during weekends or semester breaks, taking a bus, staying in a hostel, buying groceries and cooking for yourself, and going to free museums and minimal costly tourist attractions will save you the most money. Students are encouraged to look at travel costs/recreational costs before they leave to plan a budget for all you want to see and do. A non-refundable deposit ($400) will be billed to your account after you confirm your participation. This deposit will appear on your student account and the billing and due date will align with the existing UMD billing system for tuition. Financial aid is applicable to the UMD Study in England Programme including tuition waivers. Fluctuating currency exchange rates may increase or decrease the cost of your international experience. You can view the current conversion of U.S. Dollar to Great British Pound on the Oanda website. The University of Minnesota System and UMD award scholarships for University of Minnesota students studying abroad. Apply online via the IEO website by April 17, 2013. Current UMD students are also encouraged to review the scholarships available at UMD as those can be applied to your program fee. You only need to write one application letter to be considered for all (as long as you meet the criteria). The Office of Financial aid must have your letter of reference and your completed FAFSA on file by May 15, 2013. Deadlines & Dates Deadline to apply: April 1, 2013 Programme dates: September 2012 through May 2013 The UMD Study in England Programme begins near the beginning of September with classes starting near the end of September/early October. You arrive before classes start for orientation and your first excursion to bond with your peers, faculty, and staff in the program. For more information on deadlines to apply, click here Apply Now online via the International Education Office Website Orientation You will be required to obtain prior entry clearance from the U.K. before departure from the U.S. This is obtained in the form of a student visa stamped in your passport. The application is completed online and then you are required to have biometric data (fingerprints) collected, and lastly mail all documents to the British Consulate in New York. You cannot apply for your visa until 3 months before your departure date for the U.K. The International Education Office will help guide you through the application process. You are encouraged to read the United Kingdom Border Agency (UKBA) guidance on Tier 4 General Student Visa thoroughly before applying. The visa cost is an out of pocket expense not included in the program fee and the current fee is $450 and does not include shipping. Please check the UKBA for the most up to date fee.
