Scholarships

UMD offers $20,000 in scholarships annually to UMD students studying on our programs and the University of Minnesota system offers over $100,000 in scholarships to any University of Minnesota student studying on a UMD or University of Minnesota sponsored program.

General Funding Opportunities

  • Access Abroad Scholarship (University of Minnesota system-wide)
    Available for students attending any University of Minnesota campus with a disability and who are registered with the disability services office on campus. Applicants may be either undergraduate or graduate students. Note: priority is given to undergraduate students.
  • AustraLearn Scholarship
    Special opportunity for UMD students - eligible students must be participating on an AustraLearn study abroad program.
  • Bridging Scholarship
    Scholarships are awarded to American students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan. Eligible students are undergraduates majoring in any field of study and attending any recognized exchange or independent program in Japan are eligible to apply for these scholarships.
  • Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX)
    A scholarship program with a strong focus on cultural exchange. It is designed to give participants understanding for everyday life, education, and professional training in Germany and the United States.
  • Fulbright Scholarship
    Established in 1946, the Fulbright Program aims to increase mutual understanding between the peoples of the United States and other countries through the exchange of persons, knowledge and skills.
  • Lilly Lorénzen Scholarship
    This scholarship is offered to Minnesota residents who plan to carry out scholarly and/or creative studies in Sweden.  Applicants must have a working knowledge of the Swedish language, a serious desire to make a contribution to American-Swedish cultural exchange and demonstrable achievement in the selected field of study. 
  • Malmberg Scholarship
    The Malmberg Scholarship for Study in Sweden will grant significant funding for up to one year of study or research in Sweden to a U.S. resident who is enrolled in a degree-granting program at an accredited college or university, or who is a qualified scholar engaged in study or research.
  • Morgan Stanley Scholarships for Study in Japan
    Morgan Stanley has partnered with the United States-Japan Bridging Foundation (administered by the Japan-United States Friendship Commission) to provided scholarships for undergraduate American students to study at universities in Japan. Eligible students include juniors and seniors at US universities with an interest in economics and international finance who have been accepted to study in Japan.

Undergraduate Scholarships

  • Barry M Goldwater Scholarship
    The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program was established by Congress in 1986 to honor Senator Barry M. Goldwater. The purpose of the Foundation is to provide a continuing source of highly qualified scientists, mathematicians, and engineers by awarding scholarships to college students who intend to pursue careers in these fields.
  • Freeman Asia Scholarship
    Freeman-ASIA is designed to support American undergraduates with demonstrated financial need who are planning to study overseas in East or Southeast Asia.
  • Kathryn Sullivan
    Eligible students are seniors at any University of Minnesota campus who wish to enrich their academic experience with a fifth year of undergraduate study in another country.
  • Morris K. Udall Scholarship
    A merit based scholarship offered to sophomore and junior level college students in the following areas:
    • To students who have demonstrated commitment to careers related to the environment;
    • or To Native American and Alaska Native students who have demonstrated commitment to careers related to tribal public policy;
    • or To Native American and Alaska Native students who have demonstrated commitment to careers related to Native health care
  • Rotary Scholarships
    Candidates cannot be Rotarians, Honorary Rotarians, or employees of a club, district, or other Rotary entity or of Rotary International. Spouses, lineal descendants (child or grandchild by blood or legal adoption), spouses of lineal descendants, and ancestors (parent or grandparent by blood) of persons in the foregoing categories are also ineligible. Please note that Rotarians and their relatives remain ineligible for scholarship awards for 36 months after a Rotarian has resigned from club membership.

Graduate Funding Opportunities

  • IREX: Individual Advanced Research Opportunities (IARO)
    The Individual Advanced Research Opportunities (IARO) program seeks to attract, select, and support in-depth field research by US students, scholars, and experts in policy-relevant subject areas related to Southeast Europe and Eurasia, as well as to disseminate knowledge about these regions to a wide network of constituents in the United States and abroad.
  • Jacob K. Javits Fellowship
    This program provides fellowships to students of superior academic ability—selected on the basis of demonstrated achievement, financial need, and exceptional promise—to undertake study at the doctoral and Master of Fine Arts level in selected fields of arts, humanities, and social sciences.
  • Marshall Scholarship
    Marshall Scholarships finance young Americans of high ability to study for a degree in the United Kingdom. Open only to United States citizens who hold a first degree from an accredited four-year college or university in the United States with a minimum GPA of 3.7.
  • George Mitchell Scholarship
    A national competitive, the George Mitchell Scholarship, is sponsored by the US-Ireland Alliance. It is designed to introduce and connect future American leaders to the island of Ireland, while recognizing and fostering intellectual achievement, leadership, and a commitment to public service and community. Applicants are chosen annually for one year of postgraduate study in any discipline offered by institutions of higher learning in Ireland and Northern Ireland.
  • Rhodes Scholarship
    The Rhodes Scholarship, the oldest international fellowship, was initiated after the death of Cecil Rhodes in 1902, and brings outstanding students from many countries around the world to the University of Oxford.

Additional Funding Opportunities

  • John Glarner Memorial Grant
    This grant, offered annually by Växjö University, is available only for American students studying at Växjö University. It was established in memory of John Glarner (1945-1996), who was an American lecturer and international coordinator at Växjö University. The grant is for SEK 5,000.
