Foreign Studies Requirement

After spring semester 2008 the University of Minnesota Duluth will no longer offer the Foreign Studies courses, Fst 2929 and Fst 4949, required for the Foreign Studies Minor. Students who have not completed both courses by the end of Spring 2008 semester will not be eligible for the minor.

See the UMD catalog and speak with your advisor to select an alternate minor offered at UMD.

Students who have completed both courses by spring semester 2008 must complete all other requirements to earn the minor by graduation.

The University of Minnesota Duluth gives the option for students studying abroad for a full term or longer to enroll in Foreign Studies 2929 (Orientation to Foreign Studies) and Foreign Studies 4949 (Study Abroad Synthesis). These courses have been designed to help students maximize the value of their study abroad experience. Both are web-based courses which students are enrolled in during their study abroad term(s). Work on the orientation course will begin during the term prior to departure and will be completed within the first weeks at the study abroad site. Work on the synthesis course will begin during the last weeks at the study abroad site and be completed after returning home. Both courses are graded Pass/No Pass.

Each of these courses is worth two credits so students successfully completing both courses earn four credits. Students will be required to register for a minimum of an additional twelve credits (UMD credit equivalent) offered through the study abroad program. The cost of instruction for each course is $250. This is in addition to the normal program, processing and administrative fees. These other fees have been adjusted downward to partially offset the charge for these courses.

Both courses are required for the foreign studies minor at the University of Minnesota Duluth. Students studying abroad for a full year will generally be able to complete the minor entirely during their study abroad program. Students studying abroad for a single term will generally need to complete an additional four courses at UMD to satisfy the minor requirements.
