General Eligibility Requirements

To be considered eligible for financial aid at UMD, you must meet the following critera:

  • Have completed a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for each year that you are seeking aid.

  • Be a citizen or eligible noncitizen of the United States. If you are an international student, contact the International Student Adviser's Office, 138 Kirby Plaza, 218-726-8764, ieo@d.umn.edu.

  • Comply with Selective Service registration requirements if you are a male, at least 18 years old, are not currently on active duty in the Armed Forces, and were born after 12-31-59. To register, go to http://www.sss.gov/regist.htm. If you do not register before age 26, you cannot receive federal aid.

  • You may not be eligible to receive federal aid if you have been convicted of selling or possessing illegal drugs, if the drug offense you were convected of occurred while you were receiving federal student aid. Further information is available online at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/before013.htm.

  • Be admitted to a degree-seeking or eligible certificate program at UMD. If you already have a degree or are registered with non-degree-seeking status, you may have limited aid eligibility and should contact the Student Assistance Center, Solon Campus Center 23, 800-232-1339, umdhelp@d.umn.edu.

  • Not owe a refund or repayment to a university, not be in default on any educational loan, or show any unwillingness to repay any educational loan.

  • Clear any holds on your record. Further information is available online at http://www.d.umn.edu/registrar/holds.html.

Apply early for financial aid and submit all required documentation upon request. There are application deadlines and limited funding for some financial aid programs.

  • Enroll in courses that qualify for financial aid. Audited courses, extended term online telecommunication courses, and correspondence courses do not qualify for financial aid.

  • Not receive a federal Pell Grant from more than one school at the same time.

  • Meet the eligibility requirements for each aid program from which you accept financial aid.

  • Maintain credit load requirements for the aid sources you are offered. See Credit Requirements to receive financial aid. Contact the Student Assistance Center if you have questions about how your awards are affected if you will not be enrolled full-time.

  • Once admitted, maintain satisfactory academic progress as defined by the UMD requirements for Satisfactory Academic Progress (See http://www.d.umn.edu/fareg/SAP/index.htm).
