How can I prepare for the MTLE Exams?

What Tests do I need to take?

Testing Dates:     

Go online to the MTLE Computer-Based Testing Windows and click on Review the CBT Testing Windows.  The dates will appear in a pop up window.

Cost:  

• Basic Skills Test fee: $25 per subtest (Reading, Writing, and Mathematics)
• Pedagogy and Content Area Test fee: $35 per subtest
• Annual registration fee: $50
  (Paid once per test program year, September 1–August 31, regardless of number of tests taken)

Go online to http://www.mtle.nesinc.com and click on Register, create an account and choose the Reading, Writing, & Math Subtests.

Basic Skills Tests

What is it?

The MTLE Basic Skills Test are computer based exams that must be completed in order to become a licensed teacher.  At UMD they must be passed prior to admittance into the blocks for all Teacher Education Programs.

What is covered on the exam?

Exams assess knowledge in Reading, Writing, & Mathematics

When to take:                                                                

It is recommended to complete the exams before the end of your first year

Content and Pedagogy Tests

There are 2-3 subtests in each category.  All subtests MUST be passed to complete Minnesota state testing requirements. 

What if I passed one subtest but not another within a test?  Do I have to take both subtests?

No. You may register for and take only the subtest that you did not pass. However, you must wait at least 45 days before retaking the same subtest.

Early Childhood 

Required:  (3 tests)

• Pedagogy: Early Childhood (Birth to Grade 3)
• Early childhood birth thru grade 3 content area test
• Special Education Core Skills test for Unified Early Childhood major and licensed teachers adding the ECSE license

These tests should be taken during the Block III experience.

ECSE - post baccalaureate

Effective 1/1/2011 candidates for ECSE licensure are required to complete

• Early Childhood pedagogy test (birth - grade 3) 2 subtests
• Special Education Core Skills - 2 subtests

 

Elementary/Middle School

Required: (3 Tests)

• Pedagogy:  Elementary (grades K-6)-2 subtests
• Elementary Education (grades K-6) content area test-3 subtests
• Middle Level Endorsement test in specialty field (grades 5-8) - 2 subtests

These tests should be taken during your Block II experience.

IESE

Required: (3 tests)

• Pedagogy:  Elementary (grades K-6) - 2 subtests
• Elementary Education (grades K-6) content area - 3 subtests
• Special Education Core Skills- 2 subtests

Secondary

Required:

• Pedagogy: Secondary (grades 5-12)
• Content Area Test  - subject matter
• (Life Science, Earth & Space Science, Physics and Chemistry must also complete Middle Level Endorsement Science grades 5-8)

These tests should be taken during your Block II experience.

K-12

Required:

• Pedagogy:
  Elementary Education (K-6) OR Secondary (grades 5-12)
• Content Area Test - subject matter

These tests should be taken during your Block II experience.

Special Education:

If not licensed in the state of Minnesota need:

• Pedagogy: Elementary Education (K-6) OR Secondary (grades 5-12)
• Special Education Core Skills

If licensed in the State of Minnesota Special Education Core Skills test are required.

Basic Skills Test

Content & Pedagogy Tests

The Minnesota Department of Education changed testing companies as of September 1, 2010.  Testing completed with ETS (Praxis) after Sept. 1, 2010, will not be accepted. 

For Praxis I (Reading, Writing, Math) exams completed prior to September 1, 2010, scores will be accepted until December 31, 2015.

Praxis II Content and Pedagogy Exams will no longer be accepted. As of August 31, 2012 any license applicant MUST complete the required MTLE Content and Pedagogy Exams.
