Tarja Halonen, President of the Republic of Finland, was awarded an honorary doctor of laws degree for public service, presented by UMD Chancellor Martin and University regents, on July 25 in Duluth. President Halonen spoke about the importance of education and the strong ties between the U.S. and Finland. The reunion for alumni who attended UMD during the 1960s will be held July 31 to August 3. Events include cocktail receptions, a Music Showcase in UMD's Weber Music Hall, dancing with the Whitesidewalls, dinners, brunch, golf, mini reunions, and a Glensheen Mansion tour with UMD alumni authors of Will to Murder. - Bragging About Braegelmann:
UMD volleyball player Vicky Braegelmann received the Division II Honda Sports award during the 32nd Annual Collegiate Women's Sports Awards ceremony on June 23 in New York. Braegelmann, a senior volleyball star and the most decorated individual in the history of UMD athletics, was selected as the Division II Athlete of the Year.
- UMD Celebrates FinnFest 2008: UMD's Tweed Museum of Art presents the exhibition "Honoring Tradition: Finnish and Sami-inspired Textiles." A UMD art education student helped develop a Finnish folk art and design curriculum with Finnish-themed banners. Over a dozen UMD faculty, staff, and alumni are part of an array of scholars, presenters, and performers at the event.
